The Northeast’s dramatic landscapes and waterways are never-ending sources of inspiration and exploration, special places we strive to immortalize through the lens of a camera. AMC’s 14th Annual Photo Contest is an opportunity for you to share such images with other AMC members, join a community of shutterbugs with similar interests, and help build the photo archives for AMC print and online publications.
How to Enter: Submit up to three photographs in each of three categories: Scenics/Nature, People Outdoors, and Visions of AMC.
1. Upload all digital photos to the AMC Annual Photo Contest Flickr group. (To reduce use of nonrenewable resources, we are no longer accepting images on CD.)
- You will need to login with a Flickr ID or sign up for free.
- Once logged in, join the “AMC Annual Photo Contest” group by clicking on “Join this Group?” on the group’s homepage.
- Upload and tag each photo with the appropriate category: scenics08, people08, or visions08. Correctly tagging photos is important, as that’s how we’ll sort the entries for the judges.
- For images featuring AMC huts, lodges, and camps, please add a second tag with the destination name.
- Create a title for the image when prompted.
- Use the “Send to Group” link located above each uploaded image to submit the image to the AMC Annual Photo Contest group.

2. We will also accept mailed entries of printed images no larger than 8x10 inches. Send entries to AMC Photo Contest, 5 Joy Street, Boston, MA 02108. See contest rules below for more details.
Deadline: November 30, 2008
Prizes: The first place winner in each category, chosen by a panel of professional photographers, will receive one of the following prizes: a Mountain Hardwear Ultralamina 32 sleeping bag, a Jetboil Personal Cooking System, or a $100 EMS gift certificate.
Contest Rules
- Eligibility: Open to all current AMC members (except contest judges and AMC employees). Past winners are ineligible for one year.
- By submitting a photo in the contest, you grant AMC non-exclusive, royalty-free rights for unlimited reproduction in print and electronic publications and promotional materials for an unlimited period of time. We will provide photo credit if we publish your image in print. Mailed entries will not be returned.
- You may submit up to three entries in each category.
- Submit all digital images via www.flickr.com/groups/amcphotocontest. Image upload requires a free Flickr.com username and password. Free accounts have 10MB limit per photo. Submit high-resolution images (300dpi or better) formatted as jpegs or tiffs; a minimum size of 6x9 inches is preferred.
- If submitting by mail, entries can be duplicates and may be transparencies or prints in color or black-and-white, no larger than 8x10 inches. Do not mat prints. No glass-mounted slides or instant-type prints.
- Each image submitted to Flickr should be uploaded to the AMC Photo Contest group site, titled, and tagged with the appropriate category: scenics08, people08, or visions08. Mailed submissions must bear the photographer’s name, image title, and category. Also include contact information and chapter affiliation. Winners will be notified in January 2009.
- Be prepared to provide AMC with the written consent of anyone who appears in a photograph.
- Photos must depict the northeastern U.S., or if from outside the region, must have been taken on an AMC excursion.
- Decisions of the judges are final.
- The winning photos will be published in the April 2009 AMC Outdoors and posted on www.outdoors.org.
- All works must have been created since December 1, 2007.
- All mailed entries must be postmarked by November 30, 2008, and all digital entries uploaded by 11:59 p.m., Eastern Standard Time, on that date.
